Knees Contusions
This injury is most often a result of a direct impact to the kneecap and is common among athletes but can also be the result of a car accident or slip and fall onto the knee.
Symptoms of a Knee Contusion can include:
- Pain immediately after injury
- Swelling
- Bruising that occurs within 24 hours
- Sensitivity to touch

Knee Fractures / Dislocations
The patella (kneecap) acts as a shield for the knee joints and often absorbs the majority of the force for a direct injury
Separately, the knee can also become dislocated in a traumatic event or if the foot is planted and the knee becomes pushed past its normal range of motion.
Symptoms of a Knee Fracture or Dislocation can include:
- Pain immediately after injury

- Difficulty walking or bearing weight on the knee
- Difficulty straightening the knee

ACL / MCL Injuries
The most common ways these injuries can occur in athletes is:
- Twisting the knee while the foot is planted
- Direct force to the knee
- Hyperextension of the knee
- Landing while the knee is flexed
- Quickly shifting weight from one leg to the other
However, these injuries can also be the result of a traumatic incident or slip and fall.
Symptoms of an ACL / MCL injury can include:
- Hearing a “pop” in the knee
- Sudden and severe pain in the knee
- Swelling
- Difficulty bearing weight on the knee
- Weakness of the knee joints
Meniscus Tears
Symptoms of a Meniscus Tear can include:
- Sudden and severe pain in the knee
- Swelling
- Difficulty bearing weight on the knee
- Weakness of the knee
